Tanaija Kee is a senior at Howard University in Washington, D.C., majoring in journalism with a focus on print journalism and community storytelling. Kee is originally from Delaware but grew up in California and has always had a passion for writing, which has grown into a commitment to telling the stories that need to be told. Kee’s reporting has included health disparities, housing disparities, economic issues, and the daily life of underserved communities.
Kee has always been passionate about in-depth, research-based reporting and has used data analysis in her storytelling. Kee’s topics have included health care for the uninsured, the effects of gentrification on small businesses, and the economic struggles working-class families face. Kee’s reporting is driven by the need for accountability, accuracy, and empathy to ensure that the story is not only understandable but also impactful.
She has enhanced her skill set through intensive, rigorous newsroom-style coursework, interviews with diverse sources, analysis of public records, and meeting tight deadlines. Kee is most passionate about and has a stronger affinity for the organizational and editorial aspects of journalism, including blog writing and management roles such as managing editor and editor-in-chief.
Kee has a solid foundation in newsroom management, content planning, and editorial leadership; therefore, she aims to pursue a career in the organizational side of journalism. Kee is hoping for an opportunity to take on a leadership role in content planning and writing compelling blog pieces that inform and engage readers clearly and accurately, thereby fostering meaningful and impactful storytelling.
Professional Goals:
I want to become an Editor-in-Chief with both creative flair and strong organizational skills. As a result of my time working at 101 Magazine, I have come to realize my passion is not just storytelling itself, but the “behind-the-scenes” work involved in making a publication tick and running smoothly.
What Inspires Me:
Something that has always driven me is the power of storytelling to inform, connect, and elevate diverse voices in a world of storytelling. Alongside my work in editing, my passion for poetry has given me a way to express my creativity more personally, and I hope to continue doing so by sharing my work.
