Tanaija Kee is a Howard University senior, print Journalism major and Spanish minor, and has a strong reporting and storytelling background. She was an all-black news magazine columnist in her sophomore year and has consistently used her ability to report on community news. Tanaija’s experience is in reporting on controversial events to reporting on Washington, D.C. neighborhoods. Her dedication to print reporting is due to her training and commitment to providing thoughtful, in-depth reporting.
Tanaija’s sociopolitical ideology is founded on equality, representation, and truth-speaking. She believes journalism can be used to upset power structures by giving a voice to the marginalized in her local communities. Being raised in multicultural communities as a child had a profound impact on her perspective towards fairness and community, which she upholds through narratives that are centered on social justice and cultural identities. For Tanaija, journalism is a form of accountability and doing good.
Tanaija articulates her sociopolitical philosophy in her reporting through a focus on the real lives of individuals and of those whose narratives do not receive attention. Documenting food insecurities and cultural practices, she uses her journalistic voice to humanize stories and contextualize them so that local narratives are connected to larger discourse. Tanaija’s reporting illustrates her conviction that the media should make complicated topics accessible to her readers. In doing so, she illustrates how both a tool and a force and voice of progress, and a mirror of personal values, that narrative can be in your blogging journey.
